Fashion's Reflection

Fashions Reflection

The fashion industry was once ridiculed for influencing women’s low self-esteem and body image issues, however this idea has been challenged over the last few months where diversity and being body positive has been fortified.

The movement has seen curve models being celebrated at New York Fashion Week, Alexa Chung releasing a documentary with Vogue covering the need of positive body image and diversity, while here in Australia, Target launched their size 16 mannequins in stores.

However, Gigi Hadid’s post on her Instagram addressing body shamers who said she was too big to walk in fashion shows really brought the issue of being body positive into the spotlight. Hadid’s statement of, “If I didn’t have the body I do, I wouldn’t have the career I do. I love that I can be sexy. I’m proud of it” resonated with a lot of people. The enormous amount of support that Hadid received from the fashion industry, and the general public, has made it clear that the fashion industries standards of what is defined as beautiful and desirable is changing.

National modelling agency, Vivens Model Management, has supported curve models for over 20 years. According to the Queensland Manager of the agency, Georgia Barclay, at the moment curve models are in demand.

“Clients are looking for curve models and they’re asking because their customers are wanting to purchase products in those sorts of sizes,” said Barclay.

Brisbane based designer, Sacha Drake, became involved within the fashion industry after she noticed that she couldn’t find any dresses which complimented her size 14 frame. She now believes that it is the designer’s responsibility to create garments which can be worn by diverse body shapes and sizes.

“We have multi-cultural and multi-generational customers in Australia, so it’s crucial for the survival of fashion brands to factor in styles that will work on a broad spectrum of bodies,” said Drake.

This is something that Barclay agrees with enormously, stating that a specific demand for a certain type of model is incredibly driven by the designer and the product that they are trying to sell, and that in the past few months new categories of models, including “fit” and “edgy” models, are becoming sought after.

“Big clients like David Jones, Myer, Target and Kmart have been asking for curvier models and it’s not just curve models, we have clients now who are asking for models that have tattoos which years ago was unheard of,” said Barclay,
“For big parades clients are looking for something diverse, they’re looking for people with tattoos and piercings to promote their product. It comes and goes of what clients are looking for”.

Sasha Drake is hopeful that the acceptance of diverse body shapes isn’t just a phase for the fashion industry; however it will never be a phase for her brand.

“It’s easier said than done to design for different body shapes... designer brands like mine, where attention to detail and a high level of experience ensure a variety of body shapes are dressed in a way that uniquely flatter, will always be sought after,” said Drake.

Despite whether this movement will “stick” within the fashion industry, it proves that an individual’s body shape does not define what they should wear, and that every woman is sexy, beautiful and fashionable regardless of their size.

Brisbane fashionista’s will be pleased to hear that it’s been confirmed that H&M is set to open its doors in Queen Street Mall in the very near future. It’s set to be the third Brisbane store by the global retailer, with the first being opened in Indooroopilly Shopping Centre and Garden City.

The international retail giant has been in the spotlight of late, with the Balmain x H&M collection being launched, with It Girls Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid fronting the campaigns.

Like the opening for the Indooroopilly and Garden City store, we are expecting there to be a whole lot of fashionista-traffic in Queen Street Mall on opening day, maybe even a few stake outs like for the opening of Zara in Robina.

The announcement comes soon after the confirmation of Zara’s first Brisbane store set to open in Queen Street Mall later this year, yet again proving that Brisbane is stepping up its fashion game.

The Fashion Weekly team scrub up with Soda & Co

Sodaco04

Sugar is mostly a naughty treat when it comes to achieving that elusive summer body. You'll be surprised to find that sugar can be just as delicious on the outside as it is on the inside by serving as an effective yet gentle skin exfoliating ingredient. SODA & Co has harnessed the simple power of sugar in its range of all-natural body scrubs. Combined with vitamins A, C and E, the scrubs help naturally increase elasticity and tone skin while soothing redness, dryness and scarring for a smoother, more even complexion.

Read on as the Fashion Weekly team put to test the SODA & Co Mint Burst, Orange Splash and Pink Lemonade sugar scrubs.

Tried: SODA & Co Scrub Orange Splash Sugar Scrub

As soon as I opened the gorgeously packaged jar by SODA & Co, I was welcomed with a zesty and citrusy, orange smelling scrub. It reminded me of sunkissed skin and summer cocktails.

The texture is perfectly balanced, the fragrance isn't overpowering and the rich oils didn't leave my skin too dry or too oily. In fact, my skin was left feeling polished and luxurious.

Liked: A small amount goes a long way.

Disliked: My shower needed to be cleaned afterwards because of the scrubs leftover residue.

Tried: SODA & Co Scrub Mint Burst Sugar Scrub

The awakening minty fragrance of the Soda & Co Mint Burst Sugar Scrub is definitely one suitable for the morning. The sugar crystals give a deep, satisfying scrub whilst the minty fragrance leaves you feeling minty-fresh to tackle your day. I usually don’t enjoy the oily feeling after using a scrub, however SODA & Co Mint Burst Sugar Scrub left my skin feeling hydrated and soft.

Liked: The sugar crystals provided really good exfoliation on my skin.

Disliked: Wouldn’t recommend for sensitive skin as it did leave my skin slightly irritated (I might have gotten a big carried away with the scrubbing). I also recommend opening before getting in the shower, as the screw top lid will not budge as soon as your hands are wet.

Tried: SODA & Co Scrub Pink Lemonade Sugar Scrub

As an avid beauty lover, I have tried a multitude of body scrubs but I’ve never found The One. They are either too messy (yes coffee scrub I am looking at you!), not abrasive enough or too harsh on the skin.

The SODA & Co Pink Lemonade scrub has a pleasantly sweet but fruity scent. I love the texture of the scrub! It has just the right balance of sugary granules and a slightly oily liquid. It provides a really thorough scrub but at the same time it moisturizes your skin. The scrub does leave a slight residue on your skin and while I enjoy this nourishing aspect, some people might not enjoy it.

Liked: The scrub exfoliates your skin really well but doesn’t leave the skin looking and feeling dry after your shower. The sugar formula is much easier to use than a dry scrub.

Disliked: The packaging makes it hard to use the scrub in your shower. I wish someone would create a scrub in more practical packaging, as I find tubs very messy!

Three stylish hairstyles to transform your man

julestognini02

How stylish is your other half? Do you wish he would put more effort into his appearance?
Jules Tognini, renowned hairstylist and winner of three categories at the 2015 Schwarzkopf Professional Hair Expo Australia Awards, has the answer! Tognini has created a series of cool and easy to follow YouTube videos on men’s hairstyles.

For a catch-up with friends: The half top knot

Tognini predicts that long hair on men is going to be massive this season! Guys like the versatility that this longer length provides. The half top knot is a great way to stay on trend but in a more subtle way. This look works best with a texturising product for gritt and control.

To meet the parents: The low man bun

The man bun has been trending for a while and they are here to stay for another season. The hairstyle will have a refreshed look as the bun is worn low, at the nape of the neck. Complete the look with a middle part, which will ensure a smart finish.

For the fancy dinner-date: The slick hair look

Women love the slick hair look... probably because it reminds us of heartthrob Ryan Gosling. This hairstyle is a great option if you want your man looking sexy as you head out for a romantic night on the town. For this hairstyle, make sure to apply a styling product to the hair while it is wet. Using the hands work the product through your whole head and let the hair dry naturally.
