Beyonce steals the show at this year's CFDA with her acceptance speech and reminds everyone why she still runs the world. All hail Queen Bey...
Beyoncé took a break from her Formation Tour to attend the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CDFA) awards in a blinding Swarovski crystal Givenchy pantsuit paired with the notorious Reformation felt sombrero.
However... it isn't her outfit that has people talking, but rather her words.
Bey was awarded the 2016 Fashion Icon Award, and when she took the stage to accept her trophy, the audience (including her husband Jay-Z and daughter Blue Ivy) looked up to her in awe as she spoke eloquently and powerfully.
The speech was dedicated mostly to her family, who designed and sewed many on-stage ensembles back in the early days of her career. "When we were starting out in Destiny's Child, high-end labels, they didn't really want to dress four black country curvy girls," Beyoncé said. "And we couldn't afford designer dresses and couture. My mother was rejected from every showroom in New York. But like my grandmother, she used her talent and her creativity to give her children their dreams."
Oh how the times have changed for the fashion icon!
The other highlight of Beyoncé's speech is that she spoke about the power that designers have and the strength that clothes can give people.
She thanked designers that embody the creative spirit and possibilities of fashion and who use their work to inspire others who might not have a platform or voice yet.
“I want to say thank you to every designer that works tirelessly to make people feel like they can write their own story. I encourage you to not forget this power you have or take it lightly.
“We have an opportunity to contribute to a society where any girl can look at a billboard or magazine cover and see her own reflection,” she said. “You have the power to change perception, to inspire and empower and to show people how to see the true beauty that's inside all of us.”
