Nadia Fairfax talks denim rules for Cotton On collab

Warning: You will want the whole collection.

You know we love our staples here in the Fashion Weekly office, so when a denim collection drops - we can barely contain our excitement. Apart from loving a fresh take on an old classic favourite, throw a collaboration in the mix with a trusted brand and personality - we naturally pull out our credit cards.

You know we love our staples here in the Fashion Weekly office, so when a denim collection drops - we can barely contain our excitement. Apart from loving a fresh take on an old classic favourite, throw a collaboration in the mix with a trusted brand and personality and we naturally pull out our credit cards.

So what's all the fuss about? Well, retail giant Cotton On has announced a brand new and exclusive 18 piece denim capsule called 91:LTD. The collection features the latest on-trend styles including skirts, dresses, jackets and jumpsuits.

But what we are most excited about is the creative collaboration with blogger, Nadia Fairfax! She has been known to have a deep love for denim and while working with Cotton On she has shared her thoughts, tips and tricks on pulling off the key statement pieces this season.

Here is what she had to say.

What do you love about denim?

NF: My favourite part about denim today is that many of the old rules no longer apply. Whether you mix a chambray shirt with cut-offs or rock a fitted dress with an oversized jacket, denim on denim is killer. It's so easy to feel inspired, and I love that.

You know we love our staples here in the Fashion Weekly office, so when a denim collection drops - we can barely contain our excitement. Apart from loving a fresh take on an old classic favourite, throw a collaboration in the mix with a trusted brand and personality - we naturally pull out our credit cards.

What are the hot must-have denim pieces this season?

NF: The denim mini skirt or skort. Just when you least expect it, the denim mini returns! Yes it's true, here comes [the] 90's fashion again, Also anything with a frayed edge - this trend isn't going anywhere!

The culotte jumpsuit is super cute but a tough piece to wear. How can you wear this from day to night?

NF: This culotte jumpsuit feels oh-so-chic. The deep indigo denim over a classic wash is instantly versatile. It really doesn't take much to take this from day to night. A simple pair of wedges would do the trick.

What do you love most about the culotte jumpsuit?

NF: The raw edges. It adds a touch of nonchalance - we all want that 'undone' look, right?

So what's all the fuss about? Well, retail giant Cotton On has announced a brand new and exclusive 18 piece denim capsule called 91:LTD. The collection features the latest on-trend styles including skirts, dresses, jackets and jumpsuits.

How do we get your look?

NF: Keep it simple and casual. Add some statement slides and for that extra effortless look, spritz a ton of sea salt spray to the hair. Ta dah!

Why do you think denim continues to be such a staple for people?

NF: The real testament to denim is on the streets. You can hardly walk a block without spotting a girl in a perfectly styled 'Canadian tuxedo' (denim on denim). Denim is the perfect combination fo style and comfort, which is why I believe everyone from my grandmother to Alexa Chung consonantly rocks denim.

Why will fashionistas love this collection?

NF: Because you can slip from bad-ass boots to Superga sneakers to heels and back again. It's a dream capsule collection, the perfect mix and match.

The 91:LTD collection will be available online from July 29 at cottonon.com and from August 1 in selected Cotton On stores. Prices range from $39.95 - $89.95.

You'll be shimmering, shining and dazzling for up to three days! And when you're ready, simply wash out the spray and you'll be back to your normal colour. It's such a fun way to try out the haute hue trends of the moment without getting too attached!

Here's how you can get Stacey's look in eight easy step.

PREP

Apply a mousse through the lengths and ends of towel-dried hair before blow drying to create texture and grip for styling.

STEP 1

Spray an array of Joico's InstaTint Temporary Colour Shimmer Sprays individually through the hair.

STEP 2

Part the hair and split the section into three strands for braiding.

STEP 3

Braid the three sections once with the two outside sections always moving under the middle section.

STEP 4

Scoop up sections of the hair and incorporate into the braid and repeat.

STEP 5

Tie off with an elastic band.

STEP 6

Loosely pull out on the braid to cause a fuller look.

STEP 7

Use bobby pins to clean up any loose hairs.

STEP 8

Lightly hairspray into place.

FINISH

Finally, spray Joico's InstaTint Temporary Colour Shimmer Sprays on the sections of coloured hair to enhance the colour.

Ta-da!

3 #GIRLBOSSES reveal birth of killer business

If there is one thing you read today, it has to be this. 3 inspiring business women have revealed their secrets to success and they've given the best damn advice...

successfulwomeninterview01

How did they do it? Were they always this successful and glamorous? When did they take the first step to kick start their career?

If you've been asking these questions about inspiring and influential entrepreneurs for some time now, know that you are not alone. Their lives may look 'put together' but remember, people are praised in public for what they've practiced in private for years.

This month, we sat down with 3 successful #GIRLBOSSES and asked them 5 questions. To our delight, they've told us about their first job through to the light bulb moment where they came up with their killer business idea.

Keep reading if you're ready to be inspired...

Lucy Glade-Wright: Hunting for George

Lucy Glade-Wright Hunting for George

Tell us about your very first job.

LGW: My very first job was in the food court at Pacific Fair on the Gold Coast. I was 16 years old and for two horrific weeks they had me on cleaning duty, prepping food and unsuccessfully mastering the coffee machine. I quit after seeing the cook pick his nose during service. I got out of there, scored a job in retail and never looked back. To this day, food courts still give me chills.

Tell us about the moment you came up with your killer business idea.

LGW: About five years ago I designed a print for a friend's birthday. It had the words of a Dr. Seuss novel typeset across the page. When I showed it to friends they really liked it and asked if I planned on selling it. I wasn't planning on adding it to the Hunting for George website but eventually I thought 'why not?' and within a month it became our best selling product. This was the very first product we designed in-house and it kick started our own signature range of Hunting for George products. This was a defining moment for our business and to this day, that print still remains in our Top 10 best selling products.

What has been the biggest challenge you've faced in business?

LGW: We launched our debut bed linen collection in 2010 and the work behind the scenes to make that all happen was definitely the biggest challenge we've had to date. We threw ourselves into the deep end and had to navigate the many difficult pitfalls associated with manufacturing overseas. We worked things out the hard way but it was all worth it to see our collection succeed and quickly sell out.

What's your secret to success?

LGW: Hard work and plenty of it.

What is one piece of advice you would give to encourage someone to pursue their dreams?

LGW: Don't throw in the towel if you fall on your face. Shake it off and keep moving.

What's next?

LGW: If I told you it would ruin the surprise.

Monica PhromSavanh: ModaBox

Monica PhromSavanh ModaBox

Tell us about your very first job.

MP: My first job was at an apparel wholesaler in Buenos Aires when I was 15. (I was born and raised in Argentina.) I was young and hungry (literally!); I saw a sign in the window, walked into the shop and got the job.

I started in sales at a very young age and the skills I began developing from that first day formed the foundation of my career as I continue to grow as an entrepreneur.

Tell us about the moment you came up with your killer business idea.

MP: When I decided to launch ModaBox, the business model already existed in the marketplace. I knew I could create something better than what was out there but it wasn't until I realised that simply being in New York gave us access to designers and stylists that our competitors did not have. When we began to pitch our concept to the designers with whom we wanted to form exclusive partnerships, I knew we had our true differentiator - and had found the thing that would truly set ModaBox apart.

What has been the biggest challenge you've faced in business?

MP: The biggest challenge to any start-up is convincing the right people that your idea is a great one. Timing is a key element in getting funded, and right now the retail industry is in flux - scaring off many investors. But people will never stop shopping so it is only a matter of how and not if. The challenge is to continuously refine the plan and message and making sure to never miss an opportunity to add the right strategic partners.

What's your secret to success?

MP: Never stop no matter what lies in front of me. I have faced long odds my entire life and I would never have made it this far if I let seemingly insurmountable obstacles deter me from my goals.

What is one piece of advice you would give to encourage someone to pursue their dreams?

MP: Your confidence will be the thing that lets you achieve anything you dream of. Have a plan and prepare for all possibilities, but most importantly know always that you will succeed. If you have a bad day and you carry it over to the next, all of a sudden you are having a bad week that can turn in a bad month. Wake up every day with a clean slate and the confidence that yesterday's struggles won't affect what happens today. I would tell them to surround themselves with a community of inspirational and intelligent friends and mentors. Being an entrepreneur isn't the easiest career path, but if you pursue your goals with passion and integrity, you'll attract a support system that will become one of your greatest assets.

What's Next?

MP: Continue to grow and learn everyday personally and professionally.

One day invest my time and money in other female entrepreneurs.

I'd love to someday be able to focus all of my time and energy toward philanthropy and giving everything back. I want to change people's lives, especially those of underprivileged women whose stories might be similar to mine.

Lana Hopkins: Mon Purse

Lana Hopkins Mon Purse

Tell us about your very first job.

LH: I started the first baby sitters club in Armadale. I recruited local babysitters and we would babysit for the community, I loved it!

Tell us about the moment you came up with your killer business idea.

LH: In late 2013, I realised that I simply spent far too many hours pounding the pavement, looking for the perfect handbag. Yet, nothing was perfect, and I wanted perfect. Why pay premium prices if it isn't exactly what you want? I remember sitting in my car in the Westfield Bondi Junction car park, and thinking that there simply had to be a better way. I realised, if it was possible for kids to build their own teddy bears, people to create their own custom Nike shoes ... there simply had to be a way to create high quality, luxury, bespoke handbags. I had a vision... to create an elegant, state of the art bag builder, and then follow this up with high quality, customisable and bespoke creations, delivered to your door. So, during 2013 and 2014, I travelled the world looking for the best tanneries and ateliers, we hand selected quality leathers and raw materials, and employed incredibly skilled craftsmen. I also found some great software engineers to turn our vision into reality.

What's your secret to success?

LH: People- nothing happens without the right team.

What is one piece of advice you would give to encourage someone to pursue their dreams?

LH: 1. Just go for it and back yourself. 2. Stay focused on one thing at a time. 3. Build an amazing team of talented people around you. 4. When you feel like giving up, don't.

What's next?

LH: Mon Purse have immediate international expansion plans; the northern hemisphere is our main focus. We are finalising a Myers-style distribution deal in the UK, and plan to launch into US department stores in late-2016 via a collaboration with Harper's Bazaar US Executive Editor (and fellow Australian), Laura Brown. Brown will be designing a capsule range of bags that will become permanent customisable stock.

Monica, Lana & Lucy will each present at the 2016 Online Retailer Conference & Expo (OR), hosted on 20-21 July at the Royal Hall of Industries and Hordern Pavillion, Sydney. This year, OR will launch a partnership with Remodista and their global Women2Watch in Retail Disruption Program, offering Australian female Retail leaders the opportunity to be globally recognised for their success. Remodista's annual list of Women2Watch celebrates women who are leading the way in online and brick-and-mortar retailing, experimenting with new ways to solve problems in operations, marketing, commerce, supply chain, logistics and globalization. The 2017 Women2Watch list will be announced at the end of this year.

Tinashe's new single, Superlove takes a new turn

Tinashe's new single, Superlove is a change of direction for the RNB songstress. It is cute but is it good enough?

Tinashe's new single is a change of direction for the RNB songstress. It's cute but is it good enough?

The longest pre-release album promotion goes to ... Tinashe! She has been promoting her highly anticipated sophomore album “Joyride” since December 2015. Now we are in July 2016 and to our surprise we are only getting the second single. *face palm*

“Superlove” is a change of direction for the RNB songstress because it moves away from the beat saturated and moody RNB tracks that we are familiar with and focuses on a positive message about love.

It's something that the music industry needs at the moment with the current issues our world is facing and while it's a bit gimmicky, it's loveable and ultimately boppy.

At a first listen I wasn't convinced but with the infectious hook and sultry harmonies - I eventually found myself transported. “They will never love you babe like I love you babe. Baby say you'll never take my love away”.

It gives me early Ciara vibes and if that's not enough for you to be intrigued to give it a listen, then I don't know what else to say...

Drop the stereotypes and become a HERO

Sex and the City's daring and risqué character, Samantha Jones, took the taboo out of sex and has inspired a generation of women taking charge of their sex life. However, it's important that we make informed choices that puts our health at the forefront. Like any pair of red soled Louboutin's, when the right occasion presents itself - it's without question that we turn up the heat and strut our stuff.

Sex and the City's daring and risqué character, Samantha Jones, took the taboo out of sex and has inspired a generation of women taking charge of their sex life. However, it's important that we make informed choices that puts our health at the forefront.

Fashion Weekly operates on the premise of introducing excellence to the lives of women. To us, empowerment is much more than a fashion statement, it is an unwavering confidence and lifestyle. That's why we are so passionate about the mission of HERO Condoms.

HERO are an Australian, socially responsible brand who aims to diminish the alarming rate of sexually transmitted diseases and the stigma associated with condoms. Their unique, gender neutral packaging along with an innovative socially conscious and strong focus on female empowerment, they are proving that being prepared is actually being sexy.

The rise of oral contraception and the morning after pill has resulted in protection being likened to a last season dress. Gone are the days of it being trendy for males to carry rubber, despite being the easiest and most reliable way of preventing sexually transmitted diseases.

Did you know that 1 in 4 people suffer from HIV in Botswana? Sadly, women are more susceptible to contracting the virus. This alarming rate confirms the need to educate and raise more awareness about the increasing rate of infections.

We currently live in a society where females are sexually liberated, and it's resulted in a high percentage of us buying condoms. Yet, the highly erotic, male targeted packaging that dominates the market makes it off-putting to purchase protection out of fear of judgement.

Sex and the City's daring and risqué character, Samantha Jones, took the taboo out of sex and has inspired a generation of women taking charge of their sex life. However, it's important that we make informed choices that puts our health at the forefront.

HERO takes the embarrassment out of the purchase. They've listened to females concerns about the stigma associated with buying condoms, and they've delivered. They're the only company who offer female focused packaging, which has been created off the back of surveying women and asking them what they want in a condom brand.

The NEW HERO packaging is set to be launched in Woolworths by September of this year. The pioneering brand celebrates women who are being proactive bosses of their sexual health, and the sleek, inconspicuous design makes them the perfect addition to any clutch or handbag.

What's more, HERO Condoms demonstrates they have a humanitarian heart. Their 1 for 1 commitment promises to match every HERO condom sold. Their mission is to donate them to the developing African community of Botswana who has the second largest prevelance rate of HIV/AIDS in the world. So far, they have already donated 575,000 condoms to the region and are determined to meet their 2016 target of another 2 million.

With the above in mind, it's time to break down the stereotypes. Carrying condoms doesn't mean you're any less of a lady. With HERO condoms you will not only be taking charge of your own sexual health, but helping rid the world of HIV/AIDS at the same time – so why not make love and change the world.

31 thoughts we all have when lurking on an ex

Lurking is all fun and games until you see something you wish you didn't.

Lurking is all fun and games until you see something you didn't want to see.

In the social media age, we are all guilty of lurking. What's lurking you may ask? Well if you have been living under a rock, lurking (or stalking) is the process of innocently searching someone on your social media pages to see what they've been up to. Whilst this is usually an ex, lurking doesn't discriminate. You can lurk an ex best friend, that cute guy who works at that bar, or a new tinder flame. However, one thing we can guarantee is that while lurking you'll always see something you wish you didn't, and instantly want to set all of your feelings on fire.

Here's the thoughts that every woman has while lurking on an ex on Facebook.

1. I'm pretty bored I wonder what (insert name) has been up too...

2. I mean I haven't checked his FB in SO long.

3. Why is his name coming up in my recently searched? I swear I didn't stalk him yesterday?

4. Ok fine maybe I did.

5. Ok careful, CAREFUL do not like anything.

6. His profile picture is still from 2 years ago... he looks so young why did I ever like him?

7. Ok he actually looks pretty cute there.

8. He's actually sooo cute.

9. DID I JUST LIKE THAT PHOTO?!

10. Ok phew I didn't... ok breathe you're doing good. Keep your thumbs to yourself, it's fine.

11. Why is this girl liking all of his photos?

12. Ok get out of the photos what's happening on his timeline.

13. Why is his friends list filled with girls?

14. Why does this same girl keep posting on his timeline?!

15. Actually WHY does the guy in this girl's profile picture look so familiar?

[RELATED: Survival steps to help you get over your ex]

16. OMG IT'S HIM IN HER PROFILE PICTURE.

17. I bet they're together, he's moved on so fast.

18. I mean we broke up 6 months ago but still THAT WAS STILL SO FAST.

19. She's really pretty...

20. I bet he sends her all the cute texts he used to send me.

21. Whatever I'm better off without him.

22. Ok well he only liked her photo and he didn't comment on it. Does that mean they're together?

23. Why am I even caring I'm over him.

24. Ok her profile says she's single and his says he's single so maybe they're just friends and took a random couple photo?

25. Unless they're wanting to keep it on the DL remember when we initially kept it on the DL?!

26. Why am I feeling like this I need to share this pain!!

27. Ok I'm just going to take a quick screenshot of the photo and send it to my GF's, I mean no one will know.

28. Wait do people get notified when you take a screenshot of their profile picture?

29. They do on Snapchat. What if FB has decided to do the same?

30. Ok you know what I'm just going to do it.

31. I am officially never ever lurking again! Can I please go back two minutes ago? I was so happy two minutes ago.

Lurking is all fun and games until you see something you didn't want to see.

Brave Roxy Jacenko on breast cancer news

As Roxy Jacenko prepares to battle her recent breast cancer diagnosis, we reflect on the survivor she has proven herself to be in the wake of personal and professional challenges.

As Roxy Jacenko prepares to battle her recent breast cancer diagnosis, we reflect on the survivor she has proven herself to be in the wake of personal and professional challenges.

PR tour de force, entrepreneur, digital influencer, mother of two, devoted wife and all round boss lady. There are SO many words we could use to describe popular Sydney based PR agent Roxy Jacenko and today, following the distressing news of her breast cancer diagnosis, we can now add fighter to that list.

Jacenko received the difficult news just days after she noticed a suspicious lump while taking a shower and it has, understandably, floored her. Like a true warrior, Jacenko is preparing to tackle this hurdle head on and hopes that the news will promote awareness of the issue and encourage other women to see their doctor for regular breast examinations.

Jacenko has had her fair share of knock backs in the past two years, with her husband recently incarcerated for insider trading and her daughter Pixie having been the victim of indecent cyber attacks. Perhaps that is what it is like for a high powered business woman living a fast, furious, public lifestyle, but we know that Jacenko is a self-made, clever, driven, hard working individual and our money is on her to win.
We are sure Jacenko will take this in her stride as she conquers everything she sets her mind to with the energy and positivity of an inspiring go-getter. As we all prepare to throw our collective weight and support behind her in this unfortunate set of circumstances we know that Jacenko is a survivor and we are sure that's just how she would want us to refer to her.

In her recent interview with The Sydney Morning Herald, she summarises what it is like to be human in the face of adversity: "I've weathered the storm in this [ ] situation, only just...I am tough but I'm also soft inside." And we praise her for it. Here's to you Jacenko, we are there for you in this uncertain time and we know the rest of Australia will be too.

Why Kimmy K should be your confidence queen

It might bring some shock, but here's why Kimmy K is our confidence (or konfidence) Queen.

Kim Kardashian confidence queen

While scrolling through Facebook the other day I saw an image that related to me on a spiritual level. It mentioned something along the lines of how everyone mocks each other for taking selfies, until you take an amazing one yourself. In that moment you're mesmerised by your reflection. How can you possibly be so perfect? Where did your chins go? How are your brows so on fleek?

There is some kind of thrill about posting a selfie on Instagram that almost feels a bit naughty. Forget bungee jumping and extreme sports for adrenaline, all I have to do is post a selfie on Facebook for my anxiety to go through the roof. I can't help but be riddled with the thoughts of how many likes will it get? Am I being delusional and it's actually the worst photo taken in history? I'm also guilty of sending my selfies to my close friends for their opinion on what filters makes it look the best prior to uploading.

The truth is we're all a little self indulgent, self obsessed and selfish. And to be honest, I kind of I love it! I mean with the Kardashian's as our matriarchs it has to be a given. The selfie is the narcissist's weapon, however, we're increasingly getting a bad rap from our peers for posting them.

[RELATED: Why personal style and confidence says f*ck fashion]

To be fair, todays society, fuelled by social media and the ravenous need to know what everyone is up to twenty four seven (and sometimes showing off when we're doing something exciting ourselves) really contributes to this.

ABC News reports that young people are more self obsessed than any other generation in history. Reportedly, this is aided by our obsession with social media and celebrities. I must admit I'm a sucker for celebrity goss, and Kim Kardashian-West is my Queen. Fair enough she is self centred, self-obsessed and pretty selfish (remember her selfie book?) but there is something so endearing and, dare I say it, encouraging about it. There is no way that Kim gets anxious before posting a selfie on her Instagram because she is confident and she knows she looks good.

Why Kim Kardashian is our Queen

While, ABC News states we're a self obsessed generation, The Guardian reports that there is a growing number of young women who suffer from low self-esteem. Alarmingly, 52% of young women are unhappy with how they look.

While many would say this surge in low self-esteem is due to the increasingly unattainable body and beauty standards thrust upon us by society, personally I believe that 'tall poppy syndrome' is contributing to this. Society believes that being self-obsessed and absorbed is bad, and anyone who does is loves themselves.

But is loving yourself, your appearance and your life really so bad?

I believe it's time for a change. It's time to start praising each other for our self-confidence. If that's going to label us as self obsessed, self centred and selfish, so be it.

In the wise words of Kimmy K, who has admitted to taking over 30 selfies a day, “taking selfies is the purpose of life”. If you take away the selfie aspect, what she's meaning is feeling good and confident about yourself is the meaning of our existence. Like Ru Pauls says, “If you can't love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else?”

To that I say amen Ru Paul! So go forth, ignore the haters and keep posting those selfies. You know I'll be liking them.

Student designer Alexandra Gregor on standing out

TAFE QLD student designers continues to give us hope.

Let us introduce you to student designer, Alexandra Gregor from her label Alexandra James.

Brisbane's fashion industry has taken quite the hit this year with iconic design leaders closing their doors and our Government losing faith in our annual fashion week. But all is not lost thanks to the new crop of talent giving us hope with their creative flair and fresh approach.

Recently we attended TAFE QLD's Operose Diploma Graduate Showcase and were impressed with the level of emerging talent on display. To celebrate we're interviewing the students who's name must be on your radar.

First up, let us introduce you to student designer, Alexandra Gregor from her label Alexandra James.

What was the inspiration behind your collection?

AG: The inspiration for my collection came from research I was doing about ocean pollution - it is a huge problem.

As part of the assessment criteria for the course, I had to design my own swimwear print. I always try to be sustainable with my fashion so I thought it would be interesting to turn the assessment on its head into a sort of protest piece against polyester fabrics and plastic products.

I took photos of rubbish to create the print. I wanted to come up with a way to recycle plastic bags, so I used them for knitted cover-ups. I got a really beautiful result and managed to re-purpose about 200 or so plastic bags.

What has been the biggest challenge you've faced as a fashion student?

AG: The biggest challenge I faced as a fashion student was learning balance and time management. It is very tempting to keep working on something until it is perfect, but you have to juggle a lot of different things at once and it is important to know what you can achieve in the time allocated without letting something else suffer.

What's one thing that you have learnt that you will never forget?

AG: One thing I've learnt that I will never forget is perseverance. Taking a design or collection from the initial inspiration to a finished garment is a lot of fun but it can also be quite a long process, so you have to be able to keep a consistent level of enthusiasm and focus. You have to be very determined if you want to have a spectacular garment by the end of it all.

Let us introduce you to student designer, Alexandra Gregor from her label Alexandra James.

What was it like to see your collection down a runway at the TAFE QLD, Operose Fashion Parade?

AG: It was incredible! This was the first time I'd seen any of my clothes on a runway or on a model so it was just fantastic to see how they looked and moved on a body. It was also a great experience to see how people who don't know me reacted to my designs, it was very encouraging.

What advice would you give someone wanting to study fashion design?

AG: First, it's true what they say, practice makes perfect. Second, one of the most important things I learnt was trusting in my design ideas, you do have to listen to advice if something won't work technically, but it's important to stay true to your designs. Third, time management is very important. Fourth, work hard - work very hard.

What's your dream job?

AG: Head designer for a big international fashion label. No question, I love design work.

Favourite 2016 winter trend?

AG: Honestly, I don't really follow the trends. As a designer it is important to know what is happening around you, but fashion is so versatile now and moves so quickly, following trends isn't that important to me.

Dream client to wear one of your designs?

Student designer Alexandra Gregor

AG: Of course I would love anyone to wear my designs, but my dream client would have to be Grimes - one of my favourite musicians. I don't really follow celebrities but I've been a fan of Grimes' work for a while now and I like her approach to fashion.

What's next?

AG: I'll be showing the first collection for my label 'Alexandra James' at the event, RAW in August. We also post regular updates on Facebook so people can follow our journey. I'm also going back to study my Advanced Diploma in Fashion and try to do some internships later in the year as well.

Rhys Williams talks Gilded Cage and what's next

We caught up with the creator of Australian makeup brand, Gilded Cage, to talk all things beauty!

Rhys Williams talks Gilded Cage

Rhys Williams was working in the mines in Czech Republic when a close call urged him to change careers and create Australian beauty brand, Gilded Cage. We caught up with Williams to talk beauty trends, starting a cosmetic brand and what the future holds.

You were working in a mine when you experienced the life-changing moment that led to launching your Australian beauty brand, Gilded Cage. Tell us a little bit about this journey?

RW: I was in Czech Republic, in over 50°C heat, 1.2 kilometres underground. I suddenly heard the earth cracking and caving behind the longwall supports, and I thought that I might vanish forever. I'd worked in many underground mines, but that was the first time I thought if something goes wrong, it'd be all over. That's when I decided to do something more creative. Beauty was a way to channel my interests as a child and has become a career that I can build for the next thirty or forty years. I've never looked back.

How would you describe Gilded Cage?

RW: Singular Beauty.

As a recently launched brand, what do you bring to the beauty industry?

RW: Our brand is competing against a universal, one size fits all beauty format. Instead, we focus on charm, wit and the combined elements that make a woman beautiful. Gilded Cage protects, glorifies and highlights natural beauty. There's so many ways to be beautiful which is why we believe that smooth, commercial beauty is boring.

Gilded Cage currently offers a selection of lipsticks, lip glosses and eye colours – what is your most popular product so far?

RW: Our Revelation long wear cream eyeshadows have recently taken over the sales of our Unleashed lipstick collection. I am incredibly excited about this, because the formula in terms of innovation and technology currently leads the world.

Women are embracing our timeless beyond trend shades and we are receiving great feedback on the unique felt tip applicator. What is most exciting, is that whether you use the applicator, your fingertip or an eyeshadow brush you can create high end, fool proof and lasting smoky eyes in minutes.

Gilded Cag owner talks creating makeup business

What do you predict to be the top beauty trend for the season ahead?

RW: Heavy contouring textures will face more competition from formulations that uses light to define and sculpt a woman's face.

What is your recipe for success in the beauty world and what are your words of wisdom for others wanting to launch their own brand?

RW: Success takes a lifetime to build, it rarely happens overnight. My approach is that you build success every day through your actions. Success is often a painful, exhausting road that asks you to make many sacrifices along the way. In terms of advice, if you don't love what you do, or believe in it then it's time to find a new career.

[RELATED: The autumn winter 2016 beauty trends and expert tips]

Are you working on anything exciting in the near future?

RW: We have several exciting new formulations that will enter the market over the next three years. In some cases, there will be new additions to our existing collection, and completely new categories. We are also looking into creating fragrances when the time is right. It is always in the timing when you are building a brand.

For the ultimate pieces for your makeup collection, be sure to visit the Gilded Cage website. To keep up to date with everything Gilded Cage, be sure to follow them on Facebook and Instagram.
