Peiffer designers talk inspiration & what the future holds

Pfeiffer

This year has definitely been an amazing one for Sydney-based, luxury label Peiffer. Not only was the successful brand launched at the beginning of the year, their beautiful designs have received national and international recognition through celebrities such as Jennifer Hawkins and Kate Peck wearing Peiffer designs. We spoke to the owners and designers of Peiffer, Angela and Virgin, about what inspires them to create their ultra-chic collections, their favourite summer trends and what’s next for the successful label.

Pfeiffer was founded in 2015 and has already received great success with celebrities like Jessica Mauboy & Jennifer Hawkins wearing Peiffer designs. What motivated you to create your own label?

A&V: Lots of red wine and many late nights! We used to live together and often spent the night dreaming up this brand that we could say was whole-heartedly our own vision and encapsulated all the things we were inspired by. We were driven by the dream of owning our own business and creating a brand that we were proud of, and leaving behind a legacy.

Where do you find your design inspiration?

A&V: Is it cliché to say everywhere? Travel is the most rich source, cities we have fallen in love with along the way, Paris, New York & Hong Kong as well as dreams of new ones to visit. We focus on that concept of movement throughout every piece in our range. Our love affair with Photography and Mid Century Architecture always finds its way into our mood boards. The inherent confidence of women like Debbie Harry, Jerry Hall, Charlotte Rampling and a recent obsession with Veronica Heilbrunner make up our muses. Fabric is also a key source of inspiration; you can have this idea in your mind and then you see an incredible new blend or texture and it can completely change your direction, which is exciting.

What is it like designing and co-owning a label with your best friend?

A&V: Easy and Fun. We are really honest and can say anything to each other and not get emotional. It also helps that there is no time for emotions in this crazy industry. No matter how insane the deadlines are we always manage to stop and laugh, it is really the ultimate experience to have your best friend there to share both the difficulties and the successes with.

What three words would you use to describe your upcoming collection, White noise?

A&V: Effortless, contemporary and modern. This is our favourite collection to date. We've reinterpreted the classics and gave them a modern edge. Simple but inventive.

What are your favourite trends for the summer?

A&V: Skin, but we are in the business of selling clothing! Subtle exposures of skin. It’s not about baring all, but exposing those little hints of skin like in the back details of our dresses. It’s feminine and flirtatious. Natural fibres, like linen blends in traditional evening shapes worn in the day are typical of Pfeiffer in the summer.

What is the meaning behind the name Pfeiffer?

A&V: The search for a name was a tough one but collating imagery to express our vision was very easy. A photo of Michelle Pfeiffer's character in Scarface, Elvira Hancock was a common thread; it’s a strong name and resonates with many people even if they don't know how to pronounce it correctly at first.

What are the three things you can't leave your house without?

A&V: Mac lip liner in colour Spice, a measuring tape and thread clippers. We check every garment in the production line and hand snip all the loose threads, it’s a pet hate of ours.

What’s Next?

A&V: Apart from general World Domination and designing the next collection, we are planning our next overseas trip, where we lay the foundations for the following collection, source new fabrics, visit old favourites, new stores and galleries. Meeting new people from all over the world is something we both really treasure and look forward to.
