A plea to keep Brisbane's fashion scene alive

BrisbaneSecrets02

Brisbane is in the middle of a transformation. There's an atmospherical shift in our development, mindset, culture and lifestyle. Today, you and I are apart of an iconic movement where Brisbane is being globally recognised.

Despite often being a few steps behind our sister cities such as Melbourne or Sydney, we are now seeing a dramatic change that is pushing us at the forefront of food, fashion and art.

It's all good and well to be proud of the growth from our stylish scene, but maybe it's time to dissect our fashion industry and highlight the struggles that independent boutiques and designers are regularly facing.

Recently, we've seen a number of independent fashion stores shut up shop because of significant financial losses, the lack of foot traffic and hard to meet marketing demands. With e-boutiques being the new norm and giant international retailers swallowing up the market; it raises the question as to how are small retailers supposed to survive in such a dense market.

With the digital shift affecting traditional business structure, independents are now having to juggle the demanding up keep of social media, online SEO, page ranking and advertising in the digisphere.

Where there was once the opportunity to solely focus on bricks and mortar, retailers now have to spread themselves thin in every department. As of late, companies have no choice but to direct their attention to posting new content to their blog, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest, YouTube and Tumblr accounts along with constructing attention-grabbing, in-house eNewsletters.

It's of no wonder why our industry is suffering. The marketing, sales and delivery demands are peaking and the pressure to successfully manage all platforms often appear unattainable.

Recently, the Founder of Mercedez-Benz Fashion Week Australia (MBFWA) Simon Lock summoned a shift for Australia's most iconic weeks. Last year, MBFWA announced a change of dates where the event was moved from April to now being held a month later.

In his recent interview with Ragtrader he said, "We have foreseen the catalytic change that social media has been having on fashion weeks around the world.

"Via Facebook, Instagram and Twitter consumers have had a front row seat to the best designer shows in the world including Australian designers.

"This has created immediate demand for these designs which are not available in store for another six months.

According to Ragtrader, "Lock's suggestion that MBFWA be moved to August in line with the arrival of Spring/Summer collections in stores in September."

As an expert, Lock has been able to identify the shift with social media in the market place. But if experts are noticing the change and are remodelling the industry's structure to keep up with the times, how are independents expected to do the same?

The main question is raised on what can we do as an evolving city to support the emerging and long standing boutiques and designers?

As Brisbane's dining, apparel and lifestyle scene matures, we mustn't forget about the hard-working, fashion entrepreneurs who quite literally put clothes on our backs.

Maybe it's a plea, but it's worth taking some time out of your busy schedule to support your local favourites by double tapping an Instagram snap or liking a photo on Facebook. Better yet, shop their e-store or visit them in-house to say hello and shop their latest ranges.

By supporting our local scene, in a larger scale we are subsequently contributing to Brisbane's success. {jcomments on}

Elevate your booty game with Levi's Wedgie Jeans

Sexy tush without the gym time? We want in!

It looks like the large focus on booty-lisious derrieres aren't going away soon, as iconic denim brand Levi is taking a desirable booty to another level with their Wedgie Jean... yep you read that right!

The unfortunately named, Wedgie Jean is made from a stretch fabric that will, according to the Levi's website, comfortably "hug your waist and hips, showcasing your best assets."

Kylie Jenner debuted her backside in the jeans a few weeks ago on Instagram and is no doubt a big influence on the popularity of this trend.

"The Wedgie was inspired by the way girls were wearing vintage Levi's," Jonathan Cheung, senior vice president of Levi's Global Design, told Mashable.

"Just as the 501 CT was inspired by girls wearing the 501 a little bit slouchy, the Wedgie is inspired by girls [who] were downsizing a vintage 505 and wearing it very close and almost vacuum-packed to the rear-ends -- hence the affectionate and cheeky name."

The style is reminiscent of the 90s MOM jeans with a more flattering fit thanks to its high waist - which prevents that awkward denim bulge from forming - and the slightly tilted pockets that further the illusion of a perky butt. The jeans also cinches at the waist, creating that sexy hourglass illusion without hitting the gym.

We don't know about you but a butt lift without the need to do endless squats is right up our alley!

Ten of the best hacks for taking an amazing selfie

SelfieTip02

Personally, I hate taking selfies but they are no longer avoidable.

Last Sunday I was holed up in bed, stuffing my face and binging on Supernatural when my phone flashed with a Snapchat notification - a selfie from my on-again-off-again fling asking what I'm doing... Now I'm suppose to send photos sans makeup and my hair a mess, WHAT!?

Snapchat and selfies are simply part of the modern dating world. This means it's time to seriously step up that selfie game!

These tips will help you achieve that sexy I'm-totally-just-chilling-and-look-this-good-naturally selfie.

1. The duck face is so 2015!

That's right ladies, the 'cheeks sucked in and lips puckered' look is no longer a thing. The new perfect pout is the smouldering fish gape.

2. Do the hair toss & lip bite

Right before taking your selfie, flip your head over and back for sexy locks that will frame your face perfectly and lightly bite your lip for a plump flush of colour.

3. Lighting is everything

There is a reason that everytime a woman looks good people comment that she looks 'glowing', 'radiant' or 'lit from within'. The right lighting that highlights your face and eliminates shadows is essential for taking a flattering photo.

4. Check your surroundings

The trick to a perfect selfie is not to let anyone know how much effort you put into creating the snap! Make sure to check the background of your photos for any embarrassing clues.

5. Consider the angle

Have you ever experienced that moment when you open your front camera by accident and get the shock of your life as you're greeted by what looks like your face with a few additional chins? The most flattering photos are taken from a slightly higher angle than your head.

6. The rule of thirds

Drawing on professional photography compositions, don't put yourself dead centre in the photo but rather to the left or the right of the shot.

7. Elevate your eyes

Avoid looking sleepy/bored and make your eyes look bigger and brighter by setting your gaze at the lens or slightly above it rather than staring at yourself in the screen.

8. Strike a pose

Keep snapping and take a few photos, testing out different angles to ensure you end up with something you like.

9. It's all in the final touches

Avoid those overly obvious Instagram filters and instead edit the brightness and contrast of your selfie with easy editing apps like VSCO Cam or Snapseed.

10. Finally, have fun with it!

The sings that he has totally unleashed your inner crazy

UnleashCrazy13

Inside each calm, collected, hard working woman is an inner psycho just waiting for a f*ckboy to bring her out.

Now I'm not talking Gone-Girl-stage-your-own-death-with-one-messed-up-journal crazy, but when it comes to the male species, there are things us ladies do that we certainly aren't proud of.

It's easy to lose your #idontneedaman attitude - and let's be honest, all common sense - when you have a man messing with your head and sending you total mixed signals.

The good thing? We've all been there babe!

Scenario 1: When you're totally playing hard to get with a guy but you end up sending him 4 text messages, 6 Facebook pokes and 3 snapchats of your cat.

UnleashCrazy03

Scenario 2: When he doesn't reply to your texts within a manner of minutes you decide, "Screw him!" and delete his number from your phone. You then continually check your phone every few minutes, just in case.

UnleashCrazy02

Scenario 3: He finally replies and you over-analyse every character of that text.

"What do you think he means by this emoji?!". You then spend the next three hours in total agony as you 'make him wait' to hear from you. Playing it cool... so cool.

UnleashCrazy01

Scenario 4: When he let's you know he is 'emotionally unavailable', you drop all the other potential nice guys you are chatting with to pursue the one you can't have. It's like having a slice of pepperoni pizza waved infront of your face when you are on a diet.

UnleashCrazy04

Scenario 5: You stalk his social media accounts endlessly... HOLD UP is that his sister or his ex?! Time to get investigative.

UnleashCrazy05

Scenario 6: You don't hear from him for days then he texts you on a Wednesday night at 11pm to "come over for a drink"... and despite all your willpower you do just that.

UnleashCrazy06

Scenario 7: You spend hours trying to match your new lacy lingerie to an outfit that will look good on that you will also need to be able to take off in with a sexy little dance but then how will you do your hair and what about makeup because you wouldn't want it smudge.... PHEW this is normal, right?

UnleashCrazy07

Scenario 8: When you finally see him again you pretend like you're totally chill and have not thought about him for one second.

Why yes, a casual non-committal relationship is TOTALLY what we want too (dies a little inside).

UnleashCrazy08

So the final question, are we messed up?

UnleashCrazy09

But men...

UnleashCrazy10

Weak ass b*tches we say...

Kanye's Yeezy Season 3 Show has everyone totally confused

Yeezy01

Manhattan's Madison Square Garden certainly had a run for it's money (literally) hosting Kanye West's Yeezy Season 3 Fashion Show. From debuting his new album "The Life of Pablo" to proclaiming he wished he owned the luxury brand Hermes, West certainly created a show to remember.

Being a long term lover and fan girl of Kanye's work I can't help feeling a little.. eh.. lost for words when it comes to his latest fashion show and not necessarily in a positive way.

His efforts could be best described as.. well.. artistic however was it truly a demonstration of fashion, or was it an an event to fuel his already well established ego?

Yeezy02

While most fashion shows run for no more than 10 minutes and have 30-60 looks we are told that Kanye's show ran for 90 minutes.

The overall big idea of Yeezy's Season 3 collection appeared to be artfully distressed streetwear under a super-luxe fur.

While his models wore over-the-knee geometric print socks, and a themed desert palette with Bauhans, his extended family-in-law sported figure hugging looks kitted out in pastel pink colours and fur textures designed by Balmain Creative Director, Olivier Rousteing. Let us just say that they certainly stood out from the dimly-lit crowd.

Another stand out had was of course, Kim Kardashian who only two days prior to the show rocked jet-black braids but for this media affair she shocked with platinum blonde locks.

While all eyes were on the glamorously dressed Kardashian family it didn't go unnoticed that Lamar Odom was present! To everyone's surprise this was his first public appearance since his hospitalisation last year.

The guest list appeared picture perfect with only the most fabulous in attendance such as Gigi Hadid, Bella Hadid, Tyga, Charlie Xcx and A$ap Rocky.

Ironically, Vogue's Contributing Fashion Editor, Lynn Yaeger was reportedly the first member of the 'real' fashion community to walk out of the show.

If it isn't good enough for Vogue then is it really fashion?

Models on the other hand were reportedly given a rather large and demanding list to follow.

Rihanna's Fenty x Puma show was a gothic affair

Fenty01

Rihanna has channeled her inner 90's punk for her latest collaborative collection for Fenty x Puma.

The songstress sent oversized hoodies, chokers and chains, thigh high boxing boots and cheeky lace ups down the runway. The backdrop was quite chilling with dry ice, a mirrored catwalk and a monochromatic forest which set the scene for a dramatic show.

The clothes were deconstructed and undone. The link between the range was the play on head-to-toe black with a touch of white, see-through fabrics, tears, textures and fur. The gothic affair was a clear fusion between the brands sportswear aesthetic and the singer's signature love of streetwear.

Fenty03

Gigi and Bella Hadid made an appearance down the runway sporting silver painted hair and jet black lipstick.

Rihanna's celebrity friends were in attendance to show their support including designer Jeremy Scott, Chris Rock, Ne-Yo and Naomi Campbell.

Ri Ri graced the runway at the end to take her final bow.

Gigi Hadid goes nude for Vogue Paris and challenges new norm

It looks like Gigi Hadid has everyone talking again! The 20 year-old Californian model continues to take the fashion world by storm. Hadid has recently been photographed for Vogue Paris' latest issue and she has two covers for the one edition.

For a more modest cover, she is drowing in statement necklaces which has been paired with a Chanel tweed jacket. Vogue Paris took advantage of Hadid's natural beauty and lush locks by capturing her less naked with her hands strategically placed in front of her nether regions.

Gigi took to instagram to express her gratitude for the cover and its contributors, "What an honour and dream come true it is to be on the cover of French Vogue. Thank you so much @mertalas @emmanuellealt".

Though for the second cover, she dons nothing but a pair of slip on pumps and bold accessories. Let's just say she leaves nothing to the imagination.

Hadid is no stranger to displaying skin, having recently debuted in the Sexy Towel Series with her ex-beau, Cody Simpson, and her appearance in Sutart Weitzman's Spring 2016 campaign. Both photographs were slightly raunchy but nothing prepared us for this!

Interestingly, being bare is starting to be a re-occuring trend within the fashion world. Harper's Bazaar recently released its January/February 2016 issue capturing Miranda Kerr completely nude. With these major fashion publications certainly changing the perception of fashion, it has spurred speculations as to the inspiration and motives behind these covers. Here at Fashion Weekly, we question where the fashion is? After all, this is what we are interested in!

There is no surprise that Hadid looks incredibly beautiful. However, as the fashion industry continues to push highly photoshopped images in-front of our eyes, it's near impossible to not desire an unrealistic body image. So, this controversially bare cover doesn't help.

Despite publications intending to inspire and motivate women through fashion, covers like these that display unachievable beauty can be extremely detrimental for body acceptance, especially within the younger demographic of women.

We wonder: when did posing completely bare for a fashion magazine become acceptable?

This spurs the underlying reasoning behind Vogue Paris releasing two covers. Does it make it less controversial by releasing a clothed Hadid and a bare Hadid?

When it comes to the French, they are recognised for carrying themselves in a confident and careless manner, whether clothed or nude. So is it because it is Vogue Paris that this is deemed socially acceptable?

We do admit Hadid, you do look great nude but for the sake of respecting the timeliness and class of fashion, we are voting for cover number 1!
