The best and worst dressed from the 2016 Met Gala

What could only be described as the world's most extravagant fashion event, the Met Gala never fails to bring the wow factor.

See what fashion's biggest names wore on the red carpet to celebrate the opening of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” exhibition.

Here's our take on the best and worst dressed from the night that showcased the future of fashion...

The Met Gala's Best Dressed 2016

1. Claire Danes

bestmetgala10

There are actually no words. This is the most talked about dress from the Met Gala. Dressed in a Zac Posen couture gown, Claire Danes embodied the true fairy-tale princess that only dreams are made of! At first glance it doesn't necessarily embody the tech theme... However, once it gets dark, the fibre-optic, woven-organza fabric illuminates and literally lights up the room.

2. Karolina Kurkova

Karolina wore another innovative design that incorporates technology and fashion. This exquisite Marchesa gown isn't just a breathtaking dress, but rather a living, breathing, responsive work of art. As the dress made it's way down the red carpet, the software within the dress monitors Twitter and changes colours which match the emotions being expressed by fans at any given moment. Amazing!

3. Poppy Delevigne

Although she looks as if she would be at serious risk of a wardrobe malfunction, this futuristic, warrior-princess creation by Marchesa jumped straight to the top of this best dressed list. All eyes were on the many intricate details which were paired perfectly against her sleek and straight blonde tresses and bold lip.

4. Kendall Jenner

Kudos to Kenny for choosing to dress differently to the rest of her family and friends (AKA the Balmain Army). Opting for an edgy, cut-out Atelier Versace number, she gets our Met Gala 2016 tick of approval.

5. Kate Hudson

bestmetgala05

In another exquisite cut-out creation from Atelier Versace, Kate wears a gown fit for a robot queen. Her metallic peep-toe pumps, relaxed waves and minimalistic make up resulted in a timeless yet futuristic Met Gala look.

6. Taylor Swift

bestmetgala01

Tay Tay totally slayed the red carpet in a bold, sequinned Louis Vuitton mini, paired perfectly with her edgy new hair and a plum lip. Our favourite part though: the incredible knee-high, strappy stilettos. Major footwear envy!

7. Alicia Vikander

bestmetgala09

Alicia's on-point, fashion streak continues as she makes her Met Gala debut in a Louis Vuitton creation and lace combat boots. So major!

8. Rachel McAdams

bestmetgala02

Another addition to the plum lip clan, Rachel looked like a golden, alien princess in this armoured Valentino gown. Her pale skin and tousled hair contrasted perfectly with this fierce gown, resulting in one of our fav Met Gala looks.

9. Beyonce

bestmetgala08

Of course only Queen B can pull off a skin-tight, latex dress. She looks incredible in this custom Givenchy gown. It doesn't look like it has much ventilation though... I guess beauty is pain after all!

10. Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik

bestmetgala07

Forever embodying the ultimate 'couple goal', Gigi stunned in her custom Tommy Hilfiger gown while her half-machine/half man partner was one of the few men on the red carpet to play with the theme. Gigi revealed she also actually designed this dress herself – how cool!

The Met Gala's Worst Dressed 2016

1. Kris Jenner

worstgala09

A darker addition to the ever present Balmain Army, from a distance it looks like Kris has mistaken her Met Gala dress for a shiny, black garbage bag. The long sleeves, black choker and dark eye make up is just all a little too much.

2. Selena Gomez

worstgala01

Wearing a much less exciting version of Alicia Vikander's outfit – Selena's Louis Vuitton ensemble doesn't seem to fit the theme. We love the boots but they look like they belong on the set of Mad Max rather than on the red carpet.

3. Sarah Jessica-Parker

worstgala02

All she needs to do is swap the Manolo Blahniks for some boots and add a sword and she'll be set to appear in the next Pirates of the Caribbean.

4. Rita Ora

worstgala04

I wonder how many feathers the cleaners will have to vacuum off the red carpet after Rita is done walking in this Vera Wang monstrosity? It definitely “wowed” but not in a good way.

5. Saoirse Ronan

worstgala03

We don't know where to even look. There's pink satin, a bunch of feathers and an encrusted butterfly brooch. Far too much going on in this Christopher Kane get up.

6. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West

worstgala10

We expected more from the power couple, but rather Kim opted to dress like all the other 15 Balmain girls which is a bit of a let down. Aside from the sequin jacket, Kanye looks like he's ready to hit up a Sunday BBQ in his white tee and jeans. Oh well, I guess they're no strangers to the worst dressed list when it comes to the Met Gala (flash back to 2013 when she dressed as my grandma's couch).

7. Michelle Williams

worstgala06

She doesn't look too pleased to be there, maybe it's because she's wearing yet another plain-jane Louis Vuitton ensemble and regrets her decision? A very interesting choice, especially for what is supposed to be a white-tie event.

8. Nicki Minaj

worstgala05

Looking as though she's jumped straight out of 50 shades of grey and added some glitter, Nicki Minaj is a hot mess in this shiny bondage gown.

9. Lorde

worstgala07

It's good to see the young New Zealander move away from her dark, gothic colours... but this outfit doesn't seem to fit the theme at all. This Valentino dress is very pretty, but seems too angelic and ethereal to be tech or machine related. We expected more considering her usual creativity when it comes to fashion.

10. Lady Gaga

worstgala08

Gaga towered above the red carpet in this outrageous outfit which is expected of the daring pop star. Deciding to go sans-pants, she went a little OTT in our books.
