Have you ever been fascinated by the life of a stylist? Could you imagine impacting someones perception and confidence when it comes to clothes? Surely you must be a little curious by now? Well, we've stumbled across a little industry secret.
The stylists and founders of Style My are coming to Australia to host a life changing, fashion filled masterclass!
Elin Mai is the Director of the UK’s most successful personal styling company Style Doctors and Tanja Mrnjaus is the Style Director of international styling consultancy ID Couture. Together they are leading industry stylists who are running a Day in a Life of a Stylist Masterclass workshop, aimed at not only aspiring stylists, but anyone who wants to learn more about enhancing their personal style.
We sat down with Elin and Tanja to talk about this rare event and to find out if the life of a fashion guru is as glamorous as it appears.
How did your journey in fashion begin?
TM: My mother would tell you that at the age of three I would style myself and others (probably not something she loved!) I was always interested in fashion and that has never changed from a young age. I then studied fashion at university and always knew that I'd be working within the industry.
EM: My fashion journey began when I did my first makeover on a friend for a school social, I did her hair and makeup and chose her dress, we were 13, she was so happy and the experience made me feel so good inside. I still get the same feeling everytime I style a client a decade on.
You both are currently based in the UK and are coming to Melbourne and Brisbane for a Stylist Masterclass. Can you tell us about what our readers can expect to experience at the workshop?
A: We currently host our Stylist Masterclasses in London and we are launching it in Melbourne & Brisbane. Given Tanja's connection with her home town Melbourne and Brisbane - we felt it was the obvious next stop.
The Stylist Masterclass workshop has been developed by us to meet the needs of the styling industry and allow emerging stylists to get hands on real life experience.
Do you think Brisbane is on-trend and trend driven?
Brisbane is such a wonderful place for creative talent to grown and it has its own distinctive style and set of trend influencers. Brisbane based designers are constantly inspiring us.
What's the 'it' accessory for autumn?
Anya Hindmarch stickers. These can be used on anything and everything!
What colour will dominate during the cooler months?
Aquamarine will dominate this season.
What are the top 3 key pieces every woman needs in her wardrobe this season?
A polo-neck knit, a perspex heel mid-calf boot and a biker jacket.
What advice would you be someone who is still discovering their personal style?
Be open and look for inspiration. Understand your body, know what features you would like to emphasise and embrace trends.
Is the life of a stylist as glamorous as it may sound?
Just like any industry there are moments of glamour and moments where you need to put in the hard work. The end the result is glamorous but the journey demands organisation, commitment and creativity.
What's next for you?
We will be continuing to build our successful masterclass and workshop model in London and expand the program across Australia. Our bigger goal is to raise awareness for the styling industry and provide essential training to retailers and individuals to elevate the level of service given across the board.
