Georgia Hobart talks how to break into the US fashion industry

Whilst beautiful, glam heels will always have a special place in our heart, there is something about a gorgeous statement flat that can make any outfit effortlessly chic (and you can avoid the foot cramps at the end of the day!). We caught up with Georgia Hobart, the founder and designer of the Australian footwear brand Hobes, renowned for their minimal and ultra-comfortable flats. We spoke to her about her inspirations, her success in America and what she misses about Australia whilst she’s living in New York.

Hobes summer collection if full of bright colours and bold prints. Where have you found your inspiration for these designs?

GH: Hobes is based around the idea of offering chic footwear basics. So introducing new prints, colours and textures seasonally is a really important part of our business, along with keeping our core product in rotation, of course. I tend to pick colours and prints based on current shade trends in lifestyle and fashion. Colour and trend forecasting is something I really enjoy about my work - and releasing new shades which I think will appeal to our audience is an important part of what we do. Inspiration comes from anywhere and everywhere - it’s tough to pinpoint one specific area, but certainly my environment and travel constantly inspires me.

There has always been a big stigma towards heels being a go to for any fashion conscious lady. Why do you think stylish flats are becoming so popular?

GH:To be honest I have never been a heels girl, so the trend towards flats and basic wardrobe items suits me to a tee. I think women are feeling more comfortable dressing in a way which not only suits their personal style, but also their lifestyle. And let’s face it- who has the time, patience, or stamina to run around in heels all day. Modern women are not sitting around, they are super busy and having a shoe that is chic, but also complements a busy lifestyle is key. Flats are a fashion and lifestyle choice most women will be very happy to see as very much on trend.

How would you best describe the difference between New York and Melbourne fashion?

GH: Fashion is very varied in NY. Anything goes, you can wear anything and try any trend without fear. Australia is a little more conservative in that sense. Shade and shoes wise, New Yorkers are renown for their love of black, and footwear here needs to be a little more hard wearing - the streets in NYC are filthy, very uneven and everyone walks so much. Since I have been here I have really come to understand this - which has resulted in our newer styles incorporating a slightly thicker more durable sole, to combat NY streets.

Australian fashion brands have found major success with the US market of late. Why do you think Aussie brands have found so much success within America?

GH: Brand 'Aussie', and all things Australian, are having a great moment in the US right now, specifically in the fashion capitals of NYC and LA. There are a number of reasons for this in my opinion. Certainly the trend towards wellness and lifestyle has played a part. Internationally Australia is seen as the wellness capital of the world. Our healthy lifestyle down under, access to incredible natural resources, and of course our world famous beaches, has led to Australia becoming a very popular destination for wellness seekers. And as we know there is always a big cross over between fashion, travel and lifestyle. Aussies are very well regarded in NYC - we’re seen as hard workers, easy going and lots of fun. It’s a really nice time to be an Australian here (New Yorkers also really love our accent) I also think the trend towards basic / timeless fashion which Australia does so well has led to many Australian brands experiencing success here.

What are your top tips for any Australian designers wanting to break into the US market?

GH: Persistence and patience! The US is a completely different beast to Australia when it comes to fashion. The market here is so incredibly huge, it really does dwarf Australia. In my experience it took us longer to get a start here than it did in Australia, but then once the ball is rolling things can move quite quickly. It’s also worth remembering that NYC is the fashion capital of the world and the best of the best brands dream of making it here - so it’s very competitive and there are thousands of brands vying for media time and space. So again, persistence and patience is key!

What do you miss about Australia while you’re living in New York?

GH: Fresh air, the beach, my family, and my cat. And Team Aussie Hobes of course!

What are your top tips to pulling off statement shoes?

GH: I wouldn’t say Hobes are a statement shoe, so I am not sure if I am equipped to answer this! We try to provide the modern day wardrobe with basics, essentials that are incredibly soft, well made and will stand the test of time and trends. Hobes in this sense is more of a lifestyle brand than a fashion brand in my mind.
